Lucifer is to return for a sixth and final season, Netflix has confirmed.

This news comes straight after the announcement that season five will drop onto the streaming platform on August 21. Here's the trailer for that series to whet your whistle.

The show's official account confirmed the good - but also slightly bad, for fans of the show - news on Twitter, writing: "The devil made us do it.

"Lucifer will return for a sixth and final season. like, FINAL final."

So, as you might have guessed from the subtle hinting in that tweet, it seems as if this season might be the last one that they're going to do.

Best enjoy it while you can.

The news about series five broke yesterday, along with a short video showing some of the - let's say -raunchier moments from the forthcoming first part of the series.

The official show account tweeted: "And now, for your viewing enjoyment, we present 66.6 seconds of #lucifer's hottest, sexiest, most downright devilish moments. season 5 part 1 drops august 21 on @netflix."

There you have it.

To be fair, six seasons is a pretty good run for a show that never looked like it would get beyond season three.

It was actually cancelled by Fox, but then later picked up by the people at Netflix - a tale as old as time - who've given it a new home, and a new lease of life.

At the time of the renewal of season five, the show's executive producers Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson said: "We are so incredibly thankful to Netflix for resurrecting our show last season, and now letting us finish the story of Lucifer on our terms."

Netflix

For the uninitiated, Lucifer is a fantasy/drama series that centres around the enticing character of Lucifer Morningstar, better know as the devil himself, as he decides to bin off his cushy life in Hell and trade it up for Los Angeles.

He first starts to run a nightclub - a worthy profession for a dark master - before becoming a consultant with the LAPD - no comment.

Anyway, you can catch up with all the previous series' on Netflix right now, and then season five - the penultimate season, let's remember - will be available from August 21.
