The official trailer for Netflix's Ozark has dropped and the stakes have never been higher:

The third season, which will consist of 10 episodes and drops on 27 March, was announced back in 2018 in a tweet from leading man Jason Bateman.

He said: "I'm happy for me, but concerned for Marty - it's official Ozark 3 is on its way."

He's right to be worried - Marty Byrde (Bateman) waded deeper into a life of crime in season two, with the final episode seeing him buy a casino boat - which the family plan to use as a front to smuggle drug money to a Mexican cartel.

It's clear from the trailer the Byrdes are in too deep to back out now. Wendy (Laura Linney) says in the clip: "We have made promises to our shareholders about this casino and I don't think we want to annoy our shareholders."

With Marty seemingly abducted and left blindfolded in the back of a car and the casino boat exploding later in the trailer, it looks like the Byrdes have made some choices they're going to regret.

Marital strife between Marty and Wendy will also reach boiling point - with Wendy even pointing a gun at her husband in the trailer.

Maybe Wendy and Marty should see a marriage counsellor.

Bateman explained at the 2019 Emmys that the new season picks up six months after the end of the second series.

He said: "The casino is up and running and that provides us with more opportunities both positive and negative, some that are tempting and some that are calming. That affects the family in interesting ways, and certainly the relationship that Marty has with Wendy."

Series creator Chris Mundy told IndieWire the new season will prioritise character over plot. He said: "The third season to us is [about] what keeps you safe and whether or not hiding keeps you safe or attacking keeps you safe.

"In other seasons - between Season 1 and Season 2, certainly - we sort of left with a whole lot of plot we needed to answer, and we intentionally didn't leave ourselves with a whole lot of plot to answer for in Season 3.

The Byrdes are laundering drug money - what could possible go wrong?

"So it's more emotional within; we write everything through the marriage. So for us, it's all about that marriage."

The official synopsis from Netflix reads: "It's six months later, the casino is up and running, but Marty and Wendy are fighting for control of the family's destiny.

"Marty preaches keeping the status quo. Aided by an alliance with Helen and drug cartel leader Omar Navarro, Wendy plots for expansion. But when Wendy's brother Ben comes into town, everyone's lives are thrown into chaos."
