Nickelodeon has signed a multi-million dollar deal with streaming giant Netflix and it looks like it could be very good news for SpongeBob Squarepants fans as there's a rumoured spin-off planned centring on Squidward. Amazing.

Everyone's favourite grumpy neighbour could be getting his very own show and it's about bloody time if you ask me.

The New York Times reports that sources briefed on the deal confirmed the SpongeBob spinoff and said it will be a 'music-based' project - which would make sense given that Squidward played the clarinet.

Before we get too excited, it's important to point out that, as yet, the spin-off hasn't been confirmed. LADbible has reached out to Nickelodeon and Netflix for comment and we'll let you know as soon as we hear back.

Nickelodeon

This isn't the first we've seen from the Netflix/Nickelodeon partnership - with two original and brand new movies, Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling and Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus, landing on the service earlier this year.

Netflix has also added a bunch of nostalgic content from the network, including Good Burger and Sam & Cat.

It's also revealed there will be future specials based on The Loud House and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, Deadline reports.

Netflix vice president of original animation, Melissa Cobb, said: "Nickelodeon has generated scores of characters that kids love, and we look forward to telling wholly original stories that re-imagine and expand on the worlds they inhabit.

"We're thrilled to continue collaborating with Brian Robbins, Ramsey Naito, and the creative team at Nickelodeon in new ways as we look to find fresh voices and bring bold stories to our global audience on Netflix."

The partnership comes as Disney launched its own streaming platform Disney+ in the US.

It was a mammoth first day for Disney+ as surpassed predictions and pulled in a whopping 10 million subscriptions off the bat.

The new service was so successful that it resulted in some technical difficulties for the company.

Halfway through yesterday, Disney+ tweeted to say: "The demand for #DisneyPlus has exceeded our highest expectations. We are so pleased you're excited to watch all your favourites and are working quickly to resolve any current issues. We appreciate your patience."

Some experts reckoned it would take up to a year to hit the 10m mark, so it's not surprising the company struggled to cope with demand.
