Listen up, true crime fans - a new documentary exploring the little-known affair between murderers Rose West and Myra Hindley is dropping on ITV next week.

As part of the network's Crime and Punishment series, West and Hindley: The Untold Story will be hosted by news presenter Sir Trevor McDonald, telling the story of Britain's two most infamous female killers during their prison years.

ITV

According to West's lawyer of 12 years, the House of Horrors killer had a romantic relationship with the Moors Murderer while they were both held in HMP Durham in the mid '90s.

The documentary will delve into their untold story, shedding light on both Hindley and West's psychological states, and their criminal behaviour while behind bars.

Hindley was dubbed one of the most evil women in the UK after being convicted of three murders alongside accomplice Ian Brady back in 1966, and later admitted to two more.

West also had an accomplice in her crimes - her husband Fred - and in 1995 she was found guilty of 10 similar murders, including her own stepdaughter.

When she was convicted at age 41, West was sent to the H 'Hell Wing' of the infamous prison, where 52-year-old Hindley also resided.

There, the women formed a tight bond, having both committed similar crimes, and their close friendship even developed into a scandalous affair.

This topic will be explored by a whole host of exclusive contributors in the 60-minute doc, including former Category A prisoners.

Viewers will learn about how their relationship cooled as they both competed to be considered 'jail royalty', launching them from lovers to rivals.

As the only two women to be given life sentences behind bars without release, the show will also examine how both Hindley and West tried to manipulate people from the inside.

ITV

Hindley died from bronchial pneumonia at West Suffolk Hospital in November 2002, while West continues to carry out her sentence in New Hall jail in Wakefield.

According to ITV's description of the show: "The programme shows how Hindley continued to manipulate people from behind bars, just as she deceived the children she abducted, even persuading a nun turned prison guard to help her escape.

"Meanwhile West continued to demand favours of her children, and tried to control their lives from behind bars and she still displays terrifying flashes of rage."

If you want to find out more about this unlikely affair, you can catch West and Hindley: The Untold Story next Monday (21 September) on ITV at 9pm.
