A new version of the much-loved Roald Dahl classic Matilda is set to come to Netflix.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming giant is working with Sony Pictures to create a film based on the wildly successful stage production Matilda the Musical, which in turn was based on the ever-popular children's book Matilda by Roald Dahl.

The report claims that once completed, the new flick will be released exclusively in UK cinemas, before being launched worldwide on Netflix.

Sources told the news outlet details of the release are 'still being worked out'.

As the movie is in such early stages, no cast details have been leaked just yet, but you'd imagine 90s kids will have a hard time accepting anyone other than Mara Wilson as Matilda Wormwood.

Back in 2018, Netflix announced it would be creating an 'exclusive new slate of original animated event series' based on Dahl's books after joining forces with The Roald Dahl Story Company. At the time it listed a number of titles, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG, The Twits and George's Marvellous Medicine.

In a statement released at the time, Melissa Cobb, vice president of kids and family content at Netflix, said: "Immersing ourselves in the extraordinary worlds of Roald Dahl stories has been an honour and a massive amount of fun, and we are grateful for the trust the Roald Dahl Story Company and the Dahl family have placed in our team to deliver more moments of shared joy to families around the world.

"We have great creative ambition to re-imagine the journeys of so many treasured Dahl characters in fresh, contemporary ways with the highest quality animation and production values."

Felicity Dahl, Roald's widow, added: "Our mission, which is purposefully lofty, is for as many children as possible around the world to experience the unique magic and positive message of Roald Dahl's stories.

"This partnership with Netflix marks a significant move toward making that possible and is an incredibly exciting new chapter for the Roald Dahl Story Company. Roald would, I know, be thrilled."

Matilda the Musical premiered all the way back in 2010 and has gone on to sell out audiences across the globe. As well as proving a hit at the box office, the production has also been praised by critics and scooped numerous awards - including a whopping seven Laurence Olivier Awards in 2012.
