A new trailer for the long-awaited new Matrix film has dropped - watch it here:

The Matrix: Resurrections is the fourth film in the neo-noir sci-fi franchise, and reunites original director Lana Wachowski with stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, alongside series newcomers Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra, Jessica Henwick and Jonathan Groff.

Due for release this December - some 18 years after the last movie - the latest instalment will see Neo (Reeves) and Trinity (Moss) back in what appears the Matrix programme, although neither of them recognise each other or remember anything about their past lives.

Details of the plot are still pretty thin on the ground, but we do know it's set two decades after The Matrix Revolutions, and once again has something to do with mysterious red and blue pills - as hinted earlier this year by the film's website, you are offered the choice between, yep, you guessed it, a red and a blue pill.

Depending on which one you choose and the time that you visit the site, you are shown different footage from the movie, of which there are reportedly 180,000 variations.

Sadly, we also know there's no Laurence Fishburne, whose character Morpheus is now being played by

The actor has previously spoken out about the fact that he's not involved the fourth instalment of The Matrix franchise, simply saying he wasn't asked.

In a 2020 interview with Vulture, the 60-year-old explained: "I have not been invited. Maybe that will make me write another play. I'm looking for the blessing in that. I wish them well. I hope it's great."

But while there's no Fishburne, the good news is that Reeves has promised the fourth instalment of the series will be 'something special'.

Speaking to LADbible last year, he said: "We have a lot of hope and ambition, and we hope that people really enjoy them, and we have an ambition to make some really special films."

He added: "I haven't seen them yet, because we're still making them, but I can tell you that [director] Lana Wachowski is an incredible filmmaker and artist and she's written a wonderful script.

"We're doing our darnedest to make something special, and the same goes for John Wick, we hope that we can create a really satisfying and enjoyable next chapter."

The Matrix Resurrections will be released in cinemas on 24 December.
