This is an inspired piece of casting

Nicolas Cage is set to play Joe Exotic in an eight part TV series about the eccentric wildlife park owner and star of Tiger King.

Variety has reported that Cage will star in the scripted series based on the events shown in the hugely popular Netflix drama.

It's Cage's first ever appearance in a television series.

The eight part show, which is to be made by Imagine Television Studios and CBS, is reported to be focusing on exploring how the (admittedly only relatively) normal Joe Schreibvogel became the outlandish and - ultimately - incarcerated Joe Exotic.

The show is also thought to touch on his many efforts to keep the wildlife park open.

As you can see, Cage is a man of many faces.

Presumably, that will include at least some discussion of Exotic's nemesis and focus of an inordinately large part of his attention, Carole Baskin.

According to the reports in Variety, the rights to the series were acquired by Dan Lagana, the man who brought us American Vandal, in June 2019 and it will be based on Leif Reigstad's articles in Texas Monthly entitled 'Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into The World Of a Man Gone Wild'.

Cage has previously won an Academy Award for his role in 1995's Leaving Las Vegas and has been in countless films - of various quality - across a career that is certainly anything but normal.

In many ways, that might be decent preparation for taking on the role of Joe Exotic.

Since the release of Tiger King on March 20 this year, Exotic has become something of a cult figure, despite currently being locked up in prison on a 22 year sentence for attempting to hire a killer to bump Carole Baskin off.

He'd actually spoke out in the past to say who he would like to tackle the subject matter of his life, if something like this were ever made.

However, Cage didn't merit a mention on that list. In fact, he said that he'd prefer Brad Pitt or David Spade.

Cage will turn this role upside down, for sure.

There's pretty much no chance that Nicolas Cage isn't going to absolutely nail this part, though.

This isn't even the only adaptation of Exotic's story that is currently in the works. Saturday Night Live star Kate McKinnon is set to star and produce a series that is based on the Wondery podcast that featured Exotic on it.

McKinnon, of course, will be taking on the role of Carole Baskin.

Somehow, it feels like it'll be difficult to make either of these more strange than the original documentary series.
