Warner Bros. has confirmed Paul Dano will play The Riddler in The Batman, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The 35-year-old will follow in the footsteps of Frank Gorshin, John Astin and Jim Carrey in playing the DC Comics villain.

He will star alongside Robert Pattinson, who will be pulling on Batman's famous black cape, while Zoe Kravitz will play Catwoman.

The daughter of rock star Lenny and actor Lisa Bonet all but confirmed her casting by responding to a congratulatory Instagram post from her stepdad Jason Momoa (talk about your famous families).

She has actually already played Catwoman in the 2017 The Lego Batman Movie - though obviously she only provided the voice that time around.

It was reported in September that the script for The Batman was complete. According to Variety, shooting will begin in winter with an expected release in June 2021 - so still a fair while to wait yet.

Pattinson said he was keen on taking on the role of Batman after hearing that the script focused on a younger version of Bruce Wayne, however, he feared his chances might have been scuppered when rumours began to spread that he was lining himself up for the role before he had even auditioned.

Speaking to Variety, he said: "When that thing leaked, I was f***ing furious. Everyone was so upset. Everyone was panicking from my team. I sort of thought that had blown up the whole thing.

"I'd had Batman in my mind for a while. It's such an absurd thing to say. I sort of had an idea to do it, and I'd been prodding Matt [Reeves, who's down to direct the movie]. He didn't accept any prods. I kept asking to meet him.

"When I was a kid, it was the only outfit that I had."

Having landed the role he dreamt of as a child, Pattinson now faces the almighty task of pulling on the black mask worn by Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale and Ben Affleck.
