The new Jake Gyllenhaal-starring crime thriller The Guilty has been surpassed perhaps only by Squid Game in terms of hot new Netflix shows that have got the internet talking - but it's also been reminding people of the Tom Hardy film Locke. Check out the trailer below.
The Guilty tells the story of troubled police detective Joe Bayler, who's been demoted to 911 operator duty only to end up on a deeply disturbing case.

As he's about to hang up on a woman who he thinks has just called 911 to "talk to somebody," it becomes clear that she's been abducted, meaning a right old battle to save her life.
Bayler only has the sighting of a white van to go off, adding further tension to his dash to track down the victim before it's too late.
Amidst the plaudits on social media that it's rightly received, however, plenty of people have also been drawing parallels with Locke, which also sees events suddenly turn on the dime of a single phone call.
In Locke, The Tom Hardy-played Ivan Locke learns that a one-night stand is pregnant with his child and makes the decision to travel to be with her.
However, this sets in motion a chain of events that turn his life upside down - although you only ever learn of them via the phone calls he has on the journey.

Twitter was quick to draw comparison, mostly positively.
One user wrote: "#TheGuilty is very similar to the movie #Locke. Except Tom Hardy's character remains very calm through all of his crises, while Jake Gyllenhaal has a meltdown every 5 minutes."

Someone else added: "Just finished watching The Guilty and now need a lie down. Reminiscent of the film Locke with Tom Hardy - well worth a watch #theguiltynetflix".
A third simply wrote: "Jake Gyllenhaal in The Guilty, Tom Hardy in Locke."

While a fourth commented: "If you enjoyed THE GUILTY, I encourage you to watch LOCKE, which is one of the more unsung films of the 2010s and that features one of the best performances of Tom Hardy's career."
While there has been nothing official about whether The Guilty is inspired by Locke, what we do know is that it's a remake of the Danish film of the same name Den Skyldige, which was released in October 2018 and is based on real-life events
The original was supposedly inspired by a real emergency call which the film's director Gustav Möller observed.
So although you couldn't say that The Guilty wasn't inspired by Locke, you could well argue that it was in fact based on a true story given that it follows the narrative of the original Danish version so closely.
