The rumours were true, ladies and gents - a Percy Jackson TV series has been confirmed for Disney+. Watch the video below for confirmation:

Rick Riordan, who who wrote the series of books on which the series is based, revealed the news in a video on Twitter, saying that a TV adaptation of his book is in the works for the streaming service.

In a statement in the next tweet, he wrote: "Hey Percy Jackson fans, for the past decade, you've worked hard to champion a faithful on-screen adaptation of Percy Jackson's world. Some of you have even suggested it would be a great series for Disney+. We couldn't agree more!

"We can't say much more at this stage but we are very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality, following the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in season one.

"Rest assured that Becky [Riordan, Rick's wife] and I will be involved in person in every aspect of the show. There will be much more news in the future, but for now, we have a lot of work to do! Buckle up, demigods. It's going to be a fantastic exciting ride!"

The series will be based on the popular series of fantasy novels by Riordan, which follows a teenage Percy Jackson who happens to discover he's the son of the Greek god Poseidon.

A series of horrific events leads him to Camp Half-Blood - where 'demigods' like himself go.

He finds some new demigod friends and together they end up having a load of adventures together - kind of Harry Potter style - although the two are classed as rivals.

The first book was adapted into a film in 2010 - Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, by Fox. It was relatively successful at the box office, but it got mixed reviews from critics and audiences. At the moment, it only has a 49 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 53 percent audience score.

Fans have long since said that the books would be better as a series, and it seems their wishes have all come true at once with today's announcement.

Not much more is known about the series, and it's not certain whether coronavirus restrictions will affect production - but one thing we know for sure, is that this is happening, demigods.
