Phillip Schofield was met with nothing but support as he returned to his hosting duties for Dancing on Ice for the first time since coming out as gay.

The 57-year-old stood alongside his pal and co-host Holly Willoughby as the show opened tonight and the telly-favourite received a huge cheer from the audience.

As the judges gave their feedback following the first dance, Ashley Banjo was quick to show his support, saying: "Phil, it's been a big week, a big big week. You have always been an absolute legend but never, never, ever more so than this week, my friend.

"I think I speak on behalf of all of us when I say we've got nothing but love and respect for you."

Phil looked emotional as he nodded his thanks to the panel of judges.

Ashley is just one in a long line of celebrities who have thrown their support behind Phil following his brave decision to come out as gay.

Phil shared the news with fans on Friday (7 December) in an emotional post, in which he thanked his wife of almost 27 years Steph and their two daughters.

In a post on Instagram Stories, he wrote: "With the strength and support of my wife and my daughters, I have been coming to terms with the fact that I am gay.

"This is something that has caused many heart-breaking conversations at home.

"I have been married to Steph for nearly 27 years, and we have two beautiful grown-up daughters, Molly and Ruby.

"My family have held me so close: they have tried to cheer me up, to smother me with kindness and love, despite their own confusions. Yet still I can't sleep and there have been some very dark moments.

"My inner conflict contrasts with an outside world that has changed so very much for the better. Today, quite rightly, being gay is a reason to celebrate and be proud. Yes, I am feeling pain and confusion, but that comes only from the hurt that I am causing to my family.

"Steph has been incredible - I love her so very much. She is the kindest soul I have ever met. My girls have been astonishing in their love, hugs and encouraging words of comfort."

Immediately after sharing the post, Holly posted a photo of herself and Phil to Instagram with the caption: "Never been more proud of my friend than I am today. We'll be together at 10am on This Morning x".
