Fans have waited decades for the return of high school slackers Bill and Ted, and earlier this year it finally happened, with the announcement of a third instalment in the film series.

Bill & Ted Face the Music sees Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter back together - though with a few more wrinkles - for another wild adventure.

Filming on the movie wrapped in August this year and we now have a first look at the movie's stars in action, including model Samara Weaving, who plays Bill's kid Thea, and Brigette Lundy-Paine (Atypical), who is Ted's daughter Billie.

There is even room, weirdly, for an appearance from rapper Kid Cudi.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the musician's role, director Dean Parisot said: "He plays Kid Cudi. He gets mysteriously thrown around through various times, because all time and space is coming unglued."

But as well as a host of new faces, fans will be pleased to know that Face the Music also sees the return of William Sadler, who will reprise his role as the Grim Reaper.

Not giving too much away, though, Parisot added: "Death was in the band in the second film. Things didn't go all that well. But I'll leave it at that!"

The new movie is due to be released on 21 August 2020. Now three decades on, it picks up with the best friends well into their middle age, as they are met by a figure from the future who warns them that only one song will save their life and that of the universe itself.

Down on their luck, the pair will set off on another inter-dimensional journey through space and time, aided by their kids and a host of new historical characters and music legends.

Writer Chris Matheson said: "They were told when they were teenagers that they were going to save reality, and they've been working on it the whole time.

"Now an emissary from the future comes and says, 'You've got to do it right now. We've got literally 80 minutes or all of reality will come to an end.'"

And though Reeves may have moved away from comedy in recent years, forging a career as a cinematic hard man in the John Wick trilogy, the 54-year-old still says he finds the characters as funny as ever.

Looking back on the first two films, he said in 2018: "Time goes by quickly.

"Over the years it's been really nice to connect with people who love those characters and those films, and it's been fun to hear from fans who have become parents who have shown it to their kids.

"The ebullient spirit of [Bill and Ted], and the humour of the characters in the film, and the adventure they go on - I think it's still funny."

Party on, dudes!
