Although viewers are yet to see season five of Rick and Morty - the team are already working away on a seventh season.

Adult Swim has previously said it plans to air a lot of future episodes of the hit comedy and the writing team are stepping up to the plate.

Writer Alex Rubens shared the good news on Twitter, where he wrote: "Am I allowed to say we started writing Rick and Morty Season 7? (If not we didn't and I'm not)."

Series creator Dan Harmon let slip last year that the seventh season was being worked on, but he didn't seem too sure about he whole thing, admitting it was hard to keep up.

"I think we're working on season seven right now," he said. "I can't even keep track.

"I wouldn't know if I were spoiling season five or season six."

As for season five, Harmon also announced the show is on schedule.

Talking at the PaleyFest in October about how the pandemic has impacted the new season's arrival, Harmon said: "We're more on schedule than we've ever been.

"It kind of makes you have to focus on the whole process when you don't have this office environment anymore.

"Everyone has to run this bee colony remotely, so the honey just gets made more consistently. It's working for us."

While writer Scott Marder teased some pretty exciting storylines for the upcoming season, adding: "There's epic canon in season five coming.

"Fans are gonna, like, get knocked over by the canon we're about to hit them with...

"All the stuff we're doing is so awesome.

"I'm a huge fan before I even got to be on the show, so to get to write for it, I get to feed my excitement of loving this show before I get to write for it.

"So you'll feel that in the show. Season five, all the stuff we're doing is so awesome."

And season's four's Space Beth will also be back, with Harmon telling fans: "There's pretty groovy things coming regarding Beth... Space Beth was not a one-off character.

"That's a thing that could have been the case."

Fans of the show are used to having to wait a pretty long time between seasons to get their fix, but at least we know that it's going to be running for a long time with Adult Swim snapping up at least 70 more episodes back in 2018.
