Sam Raimi has confirmed that he's working on a new Evil Dead movie and has admitted that he's keen to step back into a director's role.

Taking part in a Reddit Ask Me Anything ahead of the release of his new flick The Grudge, Raimi was asked by a fan if there will be a final entry in his long-running cult horror series, to which he replied: "Bruce [Campbell], Rob [Tapert] and I are working with a young filmmaker who is writing a new Evil Dead story that he will direct."

Sounds interesting.

But what we really want is a new Evil Dead with Campbell back as Ash, right? Well, we might be getting that, too, if Raimi gets his way.

He added: "As for me.... I would love to direct a new Evil Dead movie... but I'd really like to do it with Bruce. And he says he's retired the character. I hope not."

Fingers crossed, eh?

This isn't the first time Raimi has mentioned that Campbell wants to step away from the camera for future Ash outings. Speaking at New York Comic Con in October, Raimi said: "There's more Evil Dead coming. [Campbell is] tired of me throwing blood on him. Forty years of Bruce and those sticky syrup shirts... He wants to work again, but he just doesn't want to play that role right now."

Let's hope he has a change of mind in future, as it's hard to imagine anyone but Campbell as Ash.

Campbell has played the character since 1978 when he appeared in short film Within the Woods, before reprising the role for three feature films - Evil Dead, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness - as well as the 2014 Starz TV show Ash Vs Evil Dead.

Speaking during an event held at the Irish Film Institute back in March 2018, Campbell ruled out another movie and said he'd ditch the character if the Ash Vs Evil Dead TV show was cancelled, which, as we know now, it was after three seasons and 30 episodes.

Asked if he'd do another movie, he said: "Another movie? No, no, no. Because if they cancel it, I think Ash is done."

When the show was dropped by Starz in 2018, Campbell announced he was stepping away from Ash. Responding to an article about fans wanting Ash Vs Evil Dead renewed he wrote: "Big props to fans for the effort, but I'm retired as Ash."

Say it ain't so, mate.
