Sacha Baron Cohen has admitted that he spent five days in character as Borat so that he could hang out with a bunch of American conspiracy theorists during the filming of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.

The British actor is known for his commitment to the cause, and willingness to chuck himself headlong into his characters, but even this must have been a stretch for him.

In an interview with the New York Times, Cohen revealed the lengths that he had to go to in order to make sure that he got the bit down for his latest film, which is released on October 23 on Amazon Prime Video.

Cohen explained that he wanted to film the conspiracy theorists to prove "that they're ordinary folks who are good people, who have just been fed this diet of lies.

"They're completely different to the politicians who are motivated by their own power, who realised that they can create fear by spreading these lies through the most effective propaganda machine in history."

In a similar vein to the first Borat film, this latest offering looks set to continue in the same theme, treading the line between comedy satire and documentary, taking in the weird and wonderful - and sometimes outright racist - characters that America has to offer.

After the first film, which garnered an Oscar nomination, Cohen was hit by a number of lawsuits from people who weren't very happy about being hoodwinked into appearing in the movie.

It's likely that some of those involved in this edition won't exactly be thrilled about it, too.

Cohen also explained how he and the crew were only able to travel to some locations when allowed because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and revealed that some scenes were potentially so dangerous that he was required to wear a bulletproof vest.

The actor also said that he never tells his wife - fellow actor Isla Fisher - when he's doing something that could potentially turn ugly, so as not to worry her.

He explained: "If there's anything dangerous that I'm going to do, I just don't tell her until it's over.

"I made a mistake with her. She once came on set just for fun. On set means coming to the minivan, which carried me around when we were shooting Bruno, and there ended up being a police chase.

"I was in a separate car and the police were trying to find me. She found the whole thing so upsetting, and she never came back on set again."

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is released on Amazon Prime Video on October 23.
