The inner workings of the largest criminal organisation in London are set to be unearthed again because Sky has confirmed there will be a second series of its record-breaking drama, Gangs of London.

Speaking about the second series, Sky UK's Managing Director of Content Zai Bennett, said: "Not only is Gangs of London Sky's most binged premiere box-set this year, it's the biggest original drama launch on Sky Atlantic of the past five years.

"It's dark, dangerous and we are thrilled it is coming back for a second series. Will the Wallace family rise again, will the Dumanis remain loyal to their new allies and who is Elliot really working for?

"All these questions and more will be waiting for Sky viewers when Gangs of London returns to screens in 2022."

The series, which has been dubbed the 'modern day Peaky Blinders' and also features that show's Joe Cole, has been praised for its contemporary take on the gangster genre and for its cinematic fight sequences.

Season one had the biggest launch of a Sky Original drama on Sky Atlantic in the past five years, with a seven-day cumulative audience of over 2.23m viewers for the opening episode.

This overtook other smash-hit Sky Originals including Chernobyl and Save Me.

Directed by Gareth Evans (The Raid), Corin Hardy and Xavier Gens, the nine-part gangland thriller follows the turbulent power struggles of London's criminal underworld, after the head of the city's most powerful family is assassinated.

In an interview with LADbible, Evans remained fairly coy about his ideas for the next series but did explain: "Obviously when we were designing it, as with anything you design the long form - you're looking at 'what can the future hold' and 'where can the story continue to go and develop'.

"And I think that by the time audiences get to where the show ends in season one, they'll know that there are so many different ways that it could play out.

"I'm keeping super vague, I'm so sorry! But there's lots of trailing loose ends of things that are all kind of like... You'd be curious to where those characters end up, and what becomes of them when you get to season two."

Actor Sope Dirisu, who plays Elliot Finch, added: "But the only way we'll find out is if people watch it and enjoy it! The audience will have to come with us and see."

Season one of Gangs of London is available to watch now on Sky.
