Can I have one for Christmas?

With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker on the big screen and The Mandalorian on the small screen it's fair to say Star Wars franchise is as popular as ever.

So, surely top of every fans Christmas list is a lightsaber, yeah?

And if a toy one doesn't seem grown-up enough for you then check out this fully functioning one created by the crew from YouTube channel The Hacksmith.

How amazing is it?

OK, so technically, it's not a lightsaber, because to create one of those you'd need an amount of thermal energy that is physically impossible to wield in a handy little device.

If you want to get technical, you'd need a whopping 1.69 gigajoules, which is stronger than a bolt of lightning.

So, instead, the team made the lesser known protosaber and it is about as close as you're going to get the real-deal. Not only does it look the part, it also burns though various surfaces and sounds quite similar. What more do you need, eh?

The device runs on a battery pack, which is what differentiates it from the lightsaber, but other than that it's pretty much the same thing as the amazing clip above shows.

The 'incredibly dangerous' piece of glowing metal looks like an awful lot of fun to use and the team from Hacksmith get it up and running.

In the clip, the host can be heard saying: "This is so hot, like my face is starting to burn." Before he demands someone brings him a head... but don't worry, he's not gone to the Dark Side, it's just a mannequin head, which he manages to burn right through with ease.

"This is so dangerous," he adds. "If it accidentally hit my face, I would be in trouble."

Naturally the comments on the clip are from eager fans who would absolutely love to give it a go, with one writing: "My childhood dreams are coming true!"

And a second posting: "This is better than the whole sequel trilogy."

Just think how much fun you could have with one of these. Still, it's important to point out that the team who created it are specially trained and having a bash yourself almost certainly would not end well - so don't try it home, OK?
