Sony Chairman Wants To Continue Disney Deal Keeping Spider-Man In The MCU

Good news for everyone!

The chairman of Sony Pictures has spoken of his desire to keep Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and prolong the studio's deal with Disney.

Tom Rothman sat alongside Disney's chief creative officer Alan Horn at a roundtable interview for The Hollywood Reporter and spoke about the deal, which was unprecedented when it was agreed in 2015, but then seemed to hit the rocks last year, when it looked as if Spidey would no longer be allowed to partake in any more Marvel movie fun.

Thanks to movement on both sides, and a drunken phone call from Tom Holland, the two movie production giants were able to thrash out a new deal that will see production on Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 start later this year.

When the topic of the deal continuing came up, Rothman said: "I hope so. I think this was a classic win-win-win.

"I think it was a win for Sony. I think it was a win for Disney. I think it was a win for fans and moviegoers.

"The only thing I would say about that is that news cycles and the rhythm of negotiations don't necessarily overlap... I think we would have gotten there and the news got ahead of some things."

It's definitely a win for Sony, that's for sure.

While the House of Mouse will reportedly get to keep 25 percent of the revenue from the forthcoming Spider-Man film, Sony will also be able to incorporate Holland's web-slinging superhero into their own universe, paving the way for inclusion in the Venom and Morbius franchises.

That could see him feature - even if it's only as a cameo - in Venom 2, released later this year.

So, everyone's happy. Sony get a front-line Marvel superstar, and Disney get a slice of a pie that they otherwise might not have had access too.

Add to this the fact that Disney currently own all of the merchandising rights to Spider-Man, and a firm grip on the overall control of the property, and it seems as if Rothman's claims it's a win-win situation are justified.

For fans of the franchise, it's perhaps the biggest win of all.

As well as seeing a much-beloved hero continue in Marvel's every changing universe - they'll more than likely get to see him in crossovers with the Sony properties.

Let's see if he can revive the Venom films after the first one received such lukewarm reviews.
