South Korean zombie flick Train to Busan is getting a US remake.

Earlier this year, Deadline reported that New Line was in negotiations with Timo Tjahjanto to direct the flick, which will be based on the wildly popular South Korean movie.

The 2016 zombie apocalypse thriller was originally directed by Sang-Ho Yeon and went on to become an international Box Office smash. It even spawned a sequel in 2020, entitled Train to Busan: Peninsula.

The US redo will see James Wan, Michael Clear, Nicolas Atlan and Terry Kalagian acting as producers and Gary Dauberman adapting the screenplay.

According to Deadline, when the rights to the movie landed on the marketplace there was a flurry of interest from numerous studios eager to snap it up - with New Line being the lucky studio to emerge victorious.

The plot of Train to Busan centres on a zombie outbreak in South Korea, during which passengers aboard a train from Seoul to Busan struggle to survive.

The remake has been questioned by some fans of the original, with one sceptical Twitter user posting: "Why try to ruin Train to Busan by making a remake when y'all can just literally watch it with subtitles?"

Another said: "How about instead of wasting your money seeing an inferior remake you just watch the hugely successful South Korean zombie thriller Train to Busan."

While a third person added: "Why is there a remake when Gong Yoo's performance cannot be topped. Just watch Train to Busan."

However, Tjahjanto has since taken to Twitter to suggest that the remake will 'rise above and beyond' expectations.

He then went on to heap praise on Wan, posting: "Needed to add that James [Wan] has been my hero since my college days.

"As a South East Asian kid from a conventional middle class family who doesn't exactly encourage artistic endeavours (i.e. blowing up heads, smearing fake blood), his rise from Saw inspired a lot of us SEA genre doofus [sic]."

As yet, the remake is still in pre-production with no official release date announced - but we'll update you as soon as it's revealed.
