A Squid Game voice actor has responded to the backlash from fans who have slammed the show's subtitle translation. Here is one viewer voicing the issues:

Youngmi Mayer filmed herself raising the problems with the show's subtitles, saying: "Every little thing that she [Mi-Nyeo] says is f*****d up. I think it's because she plays a low-class character and she's a gangster so she cusses a lot."

She went on to add: "You're missing a lot of this character and what she stands for."

Then providing people with an example of what she says is a 'huge miss' she plays a clip where the character says (in the subtitles): "I'm not a genius, but I can work out."

Youngmi then says: "What she actually said was 'I am very smart, I just never got a chance to study.' That is a huge, like trope in Korean media. The poor person that's smart and clever and just isn't wealthy.

"That's a huge part of her character. And almost everything she says is being botched translation-wise but you just missed... the writers, all they want you to know about her is that."

Responding to the video, a Twitter user called Freddie Wong explained: "I can't explain why I'm so bothered by this, but the amount of likes and views pouring in as someone confidently doesn't realize they're looking at the English closed captioning (which transcribes the dub) and not the English subtitles is astonishing.

"You can talk about what's lost in translation in a dub, but that discussion I don't think has the same viral stickiness of "Netflix is incompetent/maliciously mistranslating the dialogue." If anything this is a big platform/UI miss if so many people concur this is a problem."

In response to Freddie, Stephanie Komure, who voiced the character, wrote on Twitter: "I'd heard the subs were terrible, but this makes sense now! I'm the dub actress for Mi-Neyo, so I was in the studio when this changed.

"She was really tough to dub bc her expressions/mouth movements are so huge & up close, & things had to change to fit flaps. It's a balancing act."
