Supernatural star Jensen Ackles will be joining The Boys for Season 3, and here's how he announced the news:

According to Variety, Ackles will be taking on the pivotal role of Soldier Boy, aka the original superhero in the Amazon Prime Video drama. According to the show's own lore, Soldier Boy fought in World War II and became the first super celebrity - and a mainstay of American culture for decades.

In a statement Eric Kripke, who directs The Boys (and also created Supernatural) said: "When I was a child, I had a crazy, impossible dream - to provide Jensen Ackles with gainful employment.

"I'm happy to say that dream has come true. Jensen is an amazing actor, an even better person, smells like warm chocolate chip cookies, and I consider him a brother.

"As Soldier Boy, the very first superhero, he'll bring so much humour, pathos, and danger to the role. I can't wait to be on set with him again, and bring a bit of Supernatural to The Boys."

Earlier this year The Boys was renewed for a third season, with the streaming service confident that audiences would be excited by the prospect of another instalment.

When the news was announced in July, Kripke released a statement saying: "Amazon, in a bold and historic push to expand their 'weirdo' demographic, has greenlit Season 3 of The Boys!

"The writers and I are hard at work in the (virtual) writer's room and we're sad to say, the world has given us way too much material. We hope to be shooting in early 2021, but that's up to a microscopic virus."

He added: "As if that wasn't enough, we're bringing you a Season 2 after show, Prime Rewind: Inside The Boys. Double entendre intended. Hosted by the incomparable Aisha Tyler and guest-starring the cast and crew, it's a deep dive into how we make this insane thing.

"Seriously, thanks to Sony, Amazon and the fans. We love making this show so much, and we're thrilled we get to make more."
