The studio also uploaded an official synopsis, which reads: "The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It reveals a chilling story of terror, murder and unknown evil that shocked even experienced real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.

"One of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they'd ever seen before, to mark the first time in US history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defence."

Who will be playing the possessed young boy is yet to be revealed, although it does mean Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will be reprising their roles as paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed for the next entry into James Wan's Conjuring Universe.

Earlier this year, Farmiga confirmed the film was in production by sharing a photo of her and Wilson alongside the caption: "Happy first day Conjuring 3, Mr Warren, my PWilz."

The pair last portrayed Ed and Lorraine in 2019's Annabelle Comes Home, which once again saw them jump in and save the day when a teenager and her pal unknowingly awaken an evil spirit trapped inside the titular doll.

Speaking ahead of that movie's release, the star went on to say The Conjuring 3 will be 'massive', telling Entertainment Weekly: "Conjuring 3 is coming, and it will be a doozy.

"It will be big. So, for me, visiting these characters [in Annabelle Comes Home], it's like practising your scales and doing a few arpeggios before having to dive deep into the next one. Because the next one is massive."

Farmiga added: "Of course, any day to pal around with this guy [Wilson] and goof around on set is a good day for me.

"And I do love playing this character, I really do. I do. This is a woman who is living her potential. To be honest with you, in this climate of dissension and rancour and division, I love exhibiting their unity and their closeness and their togetherness.

"It's something special for me."

The release marked the third entry into the Annabelle series, and joins the ranks of other such horror titles within Wan's cinematic universe as The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2 and The Nun.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It hits UK cinemas on 11 September 2020.
