The Ellen DeGeneres Show will air its final season in 2022 after the host said she's no longer being challenged.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the 63-year-old said: "When you're a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged - and as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it's just not a challenge anymore."

DeGeneres broke the news to staff on the show yesterday (11 May) and is set to sit down with Oprah Winfrey on an upcoming episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show to talk about it coming to an end.

The show has run for an incredible 18 seasons, kicking off all the way back in 2008 and has notched up more than 3,000 episodes in that time.

Warner Bros unscripted TV president Mike Darnell told the publication: "Although all good things must come to an end, you still have hope that truly great things never will."

He added: "Ellen was and is an indelible piece of the television landscape, and it will be sorely missed."

However, the show hasn't been without its controversy - last year, allegations of a 'toxic workplace culture' were made in an expose from BuzzFeed news.

In response, DeGeneres made a lengthy apology when she started season 18, telling viewers: "I learned that things happen here that never should have happened. I take that very seriously. And I want to say I am so sorry to the people who were affected."

Speaking about her decision to step down, DeGeneres told The Hollywood Reporter that leaving after 19 seasons had 'been the plan all along'.

DeGeneres said: "Look, it's going to be really hard on the last day, but I also know it's time.

"I'm a creative person, and when you're a creative person you constantly need to be challenged, which is why I decided to host the Oscars or why I decided to go back to stand up when I didn't think I would. I just needed something to challenge me.

"And as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it's just not a challenge anymore. I need something new to challenge me."

When asked by the publication where she thinks she'll go next in her career, DeGeneres said she 'didn't even know the answer' but didn't rule out a return to sitcoms or movies.
