This Christmas, none other than Worzel Gummidge is making a comeback in a brand new two-part TV special - and you can now watch the first trailer for it here.

The BBC has developed two hour-long episodes - titled 'The Scarecrow Of Scatterbrook' and 'The Green Man' - in a brand-new adaptation about the friendly (yet terrifying) scarecrow, based on the books by Barbara Euphan Todd.

The teaser introduces us to The Office's Mackenzie Crook as the titular character, who comes to life to ask siblings Susan (India Brown) and John (Thierry Wickens) for their help.

Worzel says in the trailer: "There's something wrong with the weather. It's up to us to fix it."

As well as taking the title role, Crook also wrote and directed the episodes, stating: "I'm thrilled to be back working with the BBC and many members of the Detectorists team to bring Worzel Gummidge to a new generation of viewers and reintroduce him to old friends.

"Adapting Barbara Euphan Todd's books into these two films has been a joy and I've completely fallen for her charming, irreverent scarecrow."

Also starring is Monty Python's Michael Palin, The League of Gentlemen's Steve Pemberton and Harry Potter's Zoë Wanamaker.

The first episode sees Susan and John meeting Worzel after he comes to life, surprising all three of them in the process.

Per the BBC's official synopsis: "The only person more shocked is Worzel, when he discovers that the children are not in fact fellow scarecrows, but humans.

"Their worlds should never commune but fate has conspired to create an extraordinary union. The seasons have stopped and the harvest hasn't arrived.

"The rhythm of the natural world is out of kilter and this unlikely trio must try to put it right. Magic, mystery and mayhem unfurl."

The second episode welcomes another mysterious arrival in the shape of scarecrow creator The Green Man.

The BBC adds: "He isn't at all happy that Worzel is consorting with humans. Elsewhere, local aristocrat Lady Bloomsbury Barton is holding a fete, with a Scarecrow competition that Worzel is determined to win. What will Worzel's most competitive rival, Soggy Bogart, and The Green Man make of it all?"

Sounds like the nostalgia trip we all hope to enjoy over the festive period. So if you'd like to take a trip down memory lane, be sure to tune in when the show premieres on BBC One on Boxing Day (26 December) at 6.20pm.
