The first trailer for The Woman in the Window has dropped - and it looks rather intense.

Amy Adams stars as Anna Fox, an agoraphobic psychologist who appears to witness the murder of a woman (through a window).

Anna believes the woman who was murdered was her friend and neighbour Jane (Julianne Moore), but things take a turn when she is told Jane is alive and well - only now she looks like a completely different woman (Jennifer Jason Leigh).

The film is adapted from the bestselling novel of the same name by pseudonymous author AJ Finn and is directed by Joe Wright, the man behind Pride & Prejudice and Atonement.

Alongside Adams, the cast also includes Gary Oldman, Anthony Mackie, Wyatt Russell and Brian Tyree Henry.

The synopsis reads: "In The Woman in the Window a psychological suspense thriller directed by Joe Wright, an agoraphobic child psychologist befriends a neighbour across the street from her New York City brownstone, only to see her own life turned upside down when the woman disappears and she suspects foul play.

"A stellar ensemble cast brings Tracy Letts' screenplay based on the gripping, best-selling novel to life, where shocking secrets are revealed, and no one - and nothing - is what it seems."

The latest film in the ever-growing genre of thrillers based on the locations/appearance of females (see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl on the Train, Gone Girl) was originally supposed to be released earlier this year, but it was pushed back due to Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

Disney subsequently demanded a number of rewrites and re-shoots after test audiences reportedly found it too confusing.

Indeed, Tracy Letts - who wrote the screenplay - said he didn't enjoy making the film.

Speaking to The Playlist, he said: "It kind of sucked. I read the book and I thought, oh this will make a good movie, I can do this job. And then I got into the weeds of it. I was like, oh s***, this is hard. And I was also working with a lot of producers, a director and they had a lot of notes and it was hard.

"There have been some rewrites and re-shoots that I didn't have anything to do with. So we'll see what happens."

You can see for yourself when the film is at last released on 15 May 2020.
