If you're a fan of the incredibly popular and critically acclaimed PlayStation video game The Last of Us, you'll no doubt be delighted to learn that there is to be a television adaptation made by HBO.

Because they need someone with the right tools to deliver on a post-apocalyptic adventure such as this, they've drafted in Craig Mazin, who cut his teeth on the wildly successful Chernobyl, to create the show, alongside the game's director Neil Druckmann, who will help to pen the series.

Carolyn Strauss and Naughty Dog CEO Evan Wells will also act as executive producers.

The early reports were confirmed by Naughty Dog, who created the original video game, on Twitter.

If you're unfamiliar with the plot of the game, which was released in 2013, it follows a young girl called Ellie as she forms a relationship with hardened doomsday survivor Joel to get out of the dangerous quarantine zone.

Joel, who knows a thing or two about keeping himself alive in the post-apocalypse landscape, must get Ellie outside the zone because it is thought that she might hold the key to a cure for the pandemic that destroyed the USA.

This series will be concerned with the events of the first game, but there could be more as the long-awaited sequel The Last of Us Part II is to be released on May 29 2020.

Mazin, who shot to the top of the game with last year's Chernobyl, is thought to be a huge fan of the video game, which will obviously help.

He said: "Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus.

"Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I'm so honoured to do it in partnership with Neil."

In a statement, Druckmann said: "From the first time I sat down to talk with Craig I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of The Last of Us.

"With Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece. I couldn't think of better partners to bring the story of The Last of Us to life as a television show."

HBO programming president Casey Bloys added: "This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for us to partner with Craig, Neil, Carolyn and the teams at Sony, Naughty Dog and PlayStation to bring the virtual world of this acclaimed game to life."

Sony Pictures co-president Chris Parnell said: "This is the first of many shows we intend to develop with our friends at PlayStation Productions."
