Angela's Christmas is one of the most successful Irish films of recent years - and we're going to get a second helping this Christmas Day.

The production company behind the Emmy-winning animation from 2017 have announced that a second film, entitled Angela's Christmas Wish will be screen on RTE this year, following on from the story of the first movie.

"The team at Brown Bag Films worked so hard to create another magical and heart-warming family film for all to enjoy this Christmas," said Damien O'Connor, who wrote and directed Angela's Christmas. "We really hope that Angela's new story helps to bring these beloved characters to a whole new audience."

The first film was based on the only children's book by Frank McCourt, the author of Angela's Ashes, and was narrated by his brother Malachy. Frank McCourt died in 2009, so the second film is not written by him, but instead takes inspiration from his work and characters. It will tell the story of Angela's attempts to bring her father home from Australia for the festive season.

We're lucky here in Ireland, too. Everywhere else, the film will be showing on Netflix behind a paywall, but we will get the chance to see it in full for free on Christmas Day.

"RTÉ is delighted to be the first free to air broadcaster in the world to show Angela's Christmas Wish, said Dermot Horan of RTE. "Brown Bag Films have re-created Limerick on screen with a host of characters led by Angela, who will entertain the whole family this Christmas on RTÉ. The sheer talent on show, from the quality of the animation to the voice cast, is a true showcase of the best of Irish talent."

The cast from the first film are back: Lucy O'Connell will voice Angela, with Ruth Negga returning as her mother. Malachy McCourt will again narrate, and he is joined by Jared Harris, aka Lane from Mad Men, as well as Irish talents Caitríona Balfe, Moe Dunford, Pat Kinevane, Janet Moran and Don Wycherley.

Angela's Christmas Wish will be broadcast on RTÉ One on Christmas Day at 17:15.
