The Simpsons has been on air for three decades, meaning this year we were treated to the 30th Halloween special from the long-running cartoon.

To add an extra spooky twist, Treehouse of Horror XXX was also the 666th episode. Creepy eh?

In case you missed it, the special aired last night and featured the usual trio of creepy stories - this time it included a send up of Stranger Things - titled Danger Things - as well as Heaven Swipes Right, in which Homer dies and comes back in the body of a football player and a third story, When Hairy Met Slimey, focusing on a romance between Selma and Kang. Lovely stuff.

Producer Al Jean told Newsweek that after spotting how popular the first Halloween special was all the way back in 1995 - which saw Bart and Lisa telling each other scary stories inside Bart's treehouse - they were pretty sure they'd do them every year.

Teasing the latest episode, he added: "We have a Stranger Things parody, we have a segment where Homer dies before he's supposed to so he switches into the body of other people like Heaven Can Wait, and we have a Shape of Water-like romance between Selma and Kang in which Homer is happy because Kang wants to take Selma into another galaxy for the rest of her life."

The episode also starts with a little nod to iconic horror flick The Omen, in honour of it being the 666th episode.

It's fair to say the Treehouse of Horror episodes are firm favourites with fans of the show and last night's was no exception - one viewer took to Twitter to say: "Tonight's Simpsons episode was awesome! Especially the Stranger Things parody. Way to squeeze 3 seasons into one parody. It was awesome, hilarious and your average creepy."

Another added: "I love watching The Simpsons but the Treehouse of Horror episodes are always my very favourite."

While a third said: "First time watching The Simpsons in years and it's Treehouse of Horror 30 and it's a parody of Stranger Things. I'm hype!"

Oh, and in case you're wondering, the team are already working on Treehouse of Horror XXXI, as Jean revealed: "We're writing a segment next year on the 2020 election so who knows how that will turn out... we can always write it and reanimate it within a few months."
