Netflix has confirmed that the third season of The Sinner will be dropping on 19 June - meaning viewers in the UK and Ireland have just over a month to wait for the next instalment.

The new season premiered Stateside earlier this year, but now those of you across the pond can also get your fix - this time following Detective Harry Ambrose (played by Bill Pullman) as he's called to investigate what he thinks is a routine traffic accident in Dorchester, New York.

He soon realises that there's more to it than that, as the mystery unfolds into one of the most interesting and disturbing case he's ever worked on.

A character called Jamie Burns (Matt Bomer) is thought to be an upstanding local citizen, but when he becomes involved in the aforementioned car accident, he's thrown into the spotlight and his dark past comes to the fore.

On top of that, he's expecting a first child and one of the key figures in his past has decided to reappear. Sounds stressful, to say the least.

The official synopsis for the third season reads: "The Sinner's third instalment follows Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) as he begins a routine investigation of a tragic car accident on the outskirts of Dorchester, in upstate New York.

"Ambrose uncovers a hidden crime that pulls him into the most dangerous and disturbing case of his career."

Announcing the news on Twitter, Netflix wrote:

With many of us passing the time by rattling our way through TV series at the moment, no doubt the third season will be a timely treat for those in need of another gripping crime drama to add to their watch list.

One fan commented: "Brilliant series... Can't wait."

Another added: "Amazing! Thanks Netflix."

The series is executive produced by Derek Simonds.

Jessica Biel - who garnered nominations for a Golden Globe, Emmy and Critic's Choice Award for her performance in season one - and Michelle Purple also have executive producer credits through their company Iron Ocean.

The first two episodes will be directed by Adam Bernstein, who is known for directing episodes of Breaking Bad and Fargo in the past.

The Sinner season three drops on Netflix on 19 June. Until then, you can catch up on the first two seasons, which are also available to watch on the streaming service.
