Even before it aired, Netflix announced The Witcher was renewed for a second season, which is handy, because it's turned out that it's a big hit with viewers. However, what's less popular news is the fact that we'll have to wait until 2021 to see Geralt, Yennefer and Princess Ciri again.

The fantasy show, based on the books by Andrzej Sapkowski, has gone down well with viewers, who have quickly burnt through the eight-episodes and are now eagerly awaiting some more.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer wrote: "When you binge watch The Witcher in one day and then remember you'll have to wait until 2021 for season two."

Another posted: "God damn The Witcher was amazing! I need season two, like, yesterday!"

While a third chipped in: "I'm on the last episode of The Witcher and I'm sad there's no more left till whenever season two comes. God knows how long that will be."

Although we don't -as yet - have a release date for the second season, we do know that production begins in February next year and Netflix has given us a very vague date of '2021'.

Announcing the news in November, The Witcher's executive producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said: "I am so excited that before viewers dive into season one, we are already able to confirm that we'll be returning to The Continent again to continue telling the stories of Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri, and to showcase more of the amazing work that our cast and crew have delivered."

In a recent interview with Digital Spy, Schmidt Hissrich teased: "What I would say is that season one is very much about building blocks,

"It's about constructing the world, and setting up these characters, and putting them on paths, and knocking those dominoes over."

She added: "When you get to season two, all of those things start to come to play, which is that characters start meeting each other - sometimes getting along, sometimes not.

"All those things that we set up - Geralt and Yennefer; Geralt and Ciri; Yennefer and Ciri; all of the different kingdoms that you just barely hear about in season one, start rising to the surface in season two.

"So, the storytelling is a little more intense in a way, and maybe a little more focused and driven in the journeys that we're telling in season two."

Until then, season one of The Witcher is streaming on Netflix.
