The first trailer has been released for Netflix's new fantasy series Cursed which has been compared to Game of Thrones and The Witcher:

The new series, which will launch on 17 July, is based on a bestselling book by Tom Wheeler and Frank Miller. Wheeler will be directing while himself while Miller and Leila Gerstein will be executive producing the 10-part show.

Cursed is a recitation of the Arthurian legend told through the eyes of Nimue (played by Katherine Langford from 13 Reasons Why), a young woman with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake.

A synopsis from Netflix reveals: "After her mother's death, [Nimue] finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a humble mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword.

"Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther.

"Cursed is a coming-of-age story whose themes are familiar to our own time: the obliteration of the natural world, religious terror, senseless war, and finding the courage to lead in the face of the impossible."

It seems fans are eager for the release of Cursed with one taking to Twitter, writing: "I am so excited for this series. Read the book in prep for the show. It was great."

Another added: "This is me most anticipated upcoming drama now," while a third said: "WHAT IF THE SWORD CHOOSE A QUEEN? THIS IS LITERALLY EVERYTHING, THANK U FOR KATHERINE LANGFORD."

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Wheeler said: "Realising these characters from page to screen was a unique and thrilling creative challenge.

"I think first and foremost when casting for Cursed, Frank and I were looking for a mythological truth, actors who could bring the emotion and the humanity to legendary characters without losing the sense of elemental magic and epic stakes.

"Led by Katherine Langford, who is equal parts classic hero and sword-swinging badass, this extraordinary cast has brought such depth, commitment, and heart to this story. We can't wait to introduce them to audiences around the world."

Cursed will be released on Netflix on 17 July.
