A trailer has dropped for The Many Saints of Newark, the prequel to long-running mafia drama The Sopranos. Watch it here:

Accompanying the trailer, Warner Bros posted: "Legends aren't born. They're made. A prequel to The Sopranos, watch the new trailer for #TheManySaintsOfNewark, in theatres and streaming exclusively on HBO Max October 1."

All based on the events before The Sopranos, the prequel is a full-length feature film rather than a series, which will tell the story of the Newark riots during the 1960s that saw huge amounts of violence between African-American and Italian-American gangsters.

In the trailer we see a younger Tony Soprano, brought to life in the original series by none other than James Gandolfini, who sadly passed away in 2013.

Of course, there seemed to be only one logical approach, with an announcement in 2019 confirming that Gandolfini's son Michael would step into his father's shoes by taking on the iconic role.

This, according to Deadline, was not just because he shares the Gandolfini name, but also because the actor captivated the casting directors with his presence and he nailed his dad's on-screen mannerisms.

In a statement to the entertainment site, he said: "It's a profound honour to continue my dad's legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano.

"I'm thrilled that I'm going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for The Many Saints of Newark."

Sopranos fans appear to be won over already, with many commenting on the new trailer to say how 'perfect' the casting is.

One person wrote: "James Gandolfini would be proud of his son playing one his greatest characters and also I think he would be proud of this movie."

Another fan said: "I haven't been this pumped in years. HE'S GONNA DO JIMMY PROUD."

Warner Bros

A third commented: "I still feel the atmosphere of James Gandolfini in this trailer.

"It's an honour his son is taking his fawtuh's footsteps."

Another added: "The resemblance between Mike and his father is insane."

Alongside Gandolfini, the cast also features the likes of Alessandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga, Jon Bernthal, Billy Magnussen and Corey Stoll, with David Chase - the creator of The Sopranos - having produced and co-written the prequel alongside Lawrence Conner.

The Many Saints Of Newark is due to be released in cinemas and on HBO Max on 1 October.
