Just a heads up - this article contains spoilers about the latest episode of Vigil, so if you'd rather not see them click away now.

Viewers watching last night's episode of BBC'sVigil were horrified by the show's cliffhanger ending with some saying they'll be left having nightmares.

In the penultimate episode we saw Matthew Doward (played by Lorne MacFadyen) revealed as the Russian spy - who was very determined to ensure the deadly secret didn't get out.

Meanwhile Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (played by Suranne Jones) continued with her investigation into the murder of Chief Petty Officer Craig Burke (Martin Compston) on the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil.

The episode ended with Silva being bundled into a torpedo tube which began to slowly fill up with water, before abruptly ending leaving viewers unsure of the detective's fate.

And the claustrophobic scene left many viewers horrified with some saying they'd be unable to sleep.

Taking to Twitter, one said: "God the ending this week is my literal nightmare. Drowning in a dark tight space, I'm feeling anxious just watching that tbh."

Another wrote: "Proper cliff hanger at the end of Vigil this evening. I know what my nightmares are going to be this week."

A third person commented: "In a torpedo tube filling with water is literally my worst nightmare. Quite a cliffhanger to go to bed with. I don't think I'll be sleeping tonight."

And if the scene gave you the heebie jeebies, then spare a thought for poor Jones who has previously revealed she was left black and blue after filming all her own stunts.

Speaking before the show aired, she said: "When I first read the script I was like, 'Oh my god this sounds amazing - I get to do all these stunts!'

"But I forgot how old I was. I thought I was 23 when I was reading it, and that's not true anymore! So I had to do a lot of working out just to build up my strength in order to do those scenes.

"And then we had a gap partway through filming because of lockdown, and anyone who had a bit of lockdown belly will know it's quite hard to get your strength up after that.

"Most of the stunts were when we were coming back after the break, so that was quite hard to build myself back up. I got whiplash, I put my back out a couple of times... I was covered in bruises."

Ouch.

You can find out if Silva survives in the final episode of Vigil which airs on BBC One next Sunday at 9pm. Featured Image Credit: BBC
