Viewers have been enjoying Jake Gyllenhaal's 'intense' new Netflix film, The Guilty, saying it's a 'must' watch thanks to the star's 'phenomenal' performance.

The film, which landed on the streaming service on 1 October, tells the story of troubled police detective Joe Bayler, who's been demoted to desk duty as a 911 operator.

As he's about to hang up on a woman who he thinks has just dialled through to 'talk to somebody', it becomes clear that she's been abducted and Bayler is suddenly caught up in a deeply disturbing case.

With only the sighting of a white van to go off, Bayler is faced with a desperate race to track down the victim before it's too late - all while trying to decipher the true reality of the story he's dealing with.

A synopsis from Netflix reads: "The Guilty takes place over the course of a single morning in a 911 dispatch call centre. Call operator Joe Baylor (Gyllenhaal) tries to save a caller in grave danger - but he soon discovers that nothing is as it seems, and facing the truth is the only way out."

After the movie dropped online last week, many people are singing its praises, telling others to give it a watch.

One person tweeted: "Just watched The Guilty per a coworker's recommendation and it was damn good. Very intense and a crazy WTF twist, and Jake Gyllenhaal was phenomenal. Check it out on Netflix."

Someone else said: "I can't believe I just watched a man talk on the phone for almost 2hrs and it was entertaining as heck."

A third wrote: "Damn this movie The Guilty is pretty intense."

A fourth added: "If u wanna feel extremely stressed out watch The Guilty on Netflix."

Another said the film is a 'must', saying: "I was hooked has a great twist to it too loved it #TheGuilty."

And once you've watched The Guilty, fans reckon you should give Locke a go, pointing out that the two have parallels as events suddenly turn on the dime of a single phone call.

In the film, Tom Hardy plays Ivan Locke, who learns that a one-night stand is pregnant with his child and makes the decision to travel to be with her. However, this sets in motion a chain of events that turn his life upside down - although you only ever learn of them via the phone calls he has on the journey.

It's a remake of the Danish film of the same name, Den Skyldige (The Guilty), which was released in October 2018 and is based on real-life events - having supposedly been inspired by a real emergency call that the film's director Gustav Möller observed.
