Netflix's latest true crime offering The Devil Next Door, which tells the shocking story of a suspected former Nazi guard living under a new name in the US, has landed and viewers are finding the dark documentary fascinating.

The five-part show centres on John Demjanjuk, a retired mechanic who lived with his family in Cleveland, Ohio in the 1980s.

However, a group of Holocaust survivors would identify Demjanjuk as 'Ivan the Terrible' - a infamous Nazi death camp guard who tortured and killed thousands of Jewish people during World War II.

Death camp survivors found an ID card, with the name Ivan the Terrible on and a photograph of the man they said would later change his name from Ivan to John.

Off the back of this, Demjanjuk was extradited to Israel where he stood trial for crimes against humanity.

A synopsis from Netflix reads: "Israel is transfixed as a media frenzy erupts around the trial in Jerusalem, the nation plunged into trauma and fascination by 'the trial of the century'.

"As the case uncovers dark corners of memory and the horrors of war, the Demjanjuk case becomes a race against time for the defendant and his alleged victims."

Holocaust survivors found this ID card which they believe shows John Demjanjuk.

Demjanjuk always maintained his innocence but was found guilty by trial and sentenced to death by hanging - to add another twist to an already complicated story, that conviction was later overturned due to 'reasonable doubt' over John and Ivan being the same person.

On social media, viewers have been sharing their thoughts on the dark new show, with one writing: "The Devil Next Door on Netflix. F****** hell its harrowing. Hearing the Treblinka testimonies is heartbreaking and STILL we do not learn from history."

And: "I'm watching The Devil Next Door on Netflix and I think this might be the most gripping thing I've watched in years. It's a documentary that's a mini series and yes it's amazing."

Another said: "Watching The Devil Next Door on Netflix. The horror, the testimonies, the tears. I don't know how I can get through the rest of the episodes."

While a third added: "I started The Devil Next Door and it is so uneasy to watch but so interesting."

The Devil Next Door is streaming on Netflix now.
