Everyone in Australia is keen to see what happens when the ninth instalment of Fast and the Furious finally gets released.

After months of delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, audiences will finally get to feast their eyes and ears on the action-packed and utterly outrageous Fast & Furious 9.

But before you head to a cinema faster than you can key the ignition on a hot ride, you should have a quick refresh of the plot lines and characters in The Fast universe so that you're not playing catch-up.

There will no doubt be a lot of surprises, twists and turns in Fast 9 and you don't want to be sitting there wondering 'who the hell is that' or 'why are they here'.

So, we've tallied up all the films you need to re-watch so that you're in the best possible place to see the new instalment. Because, who has the time to see eight movies back-to-back?

You'll have to start where it all began with 2001's The Fast and the Furious. It introduced us to Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), who wasn't seen again until the fourth movie.

The first instalment is important because it gives us the best insight into his family tree. It's understood Fast 9 will include Dom's brother Jakob and we'll get to see more shades to the Toretto family.

Once you've polished that movie off, you need to skip the second and dive into Tokyo Drift.

Fast 9 will be bringing back the movie's protagonist Lucas Black, the American bad boy who learned how Japanese racers like to drive. We'll also be getting to see Han (Sung Kang), Twinkie (Bow Wow), and Earl Hu (Jason Tobin) in the ninth movie and they will all be playing important roles.

They will be joining Dom's mission to stop his brother, so you better watch the third instalment with keen eyes and soak up all the magic.

Han's influence doesn't just stop at Tokyo Drift. You'll need to rewatch Fast and Furious 6 because that movie not only reintroduces the character to the franchise but it also lays the foundations for his beef with Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham).

The last movie you need to rewatch is The Fate of the Furious, which was the first movie released after Paul Walker's death.

This film saw Cipher (Charlize Theron) and Dom work together for a common cause for the first time, despite initially battling against each other. Rewatching this film will remind you of Cipher's character, her background and why she will be pivotal in the ninth movie.

You could watch every single film in the franchise if you have the time, but these will give you the best context before seeing Fast & Furious 9.
