Social media went into an almighty shitstorm when Amanda Holden appeared on Britain's Got Talent, wearing a dress with a neckline that plunged all the way down to her bellybutton. Unsurprisingly, the £11,250 ($15,224) garment has attracted the most amount of official complaints to the UK's media regulator.

The Julien Macdonald designed dress sparked 663 calls, emails and other messages to OFCOM, beating out BBC One's Comic Relief and Emmerdale for the top spot for 2017 thus far. However, the regulator has opted not to punish Holden or the show because the dress 'would not have exceeded most viewers' expectations'.

Despite the official ruling, it certainly seemed to go over some people's idea of 'appropriate'. One person commented on social media that the dress looked 'beautiful', but added it "would be an amazing outfit to wear on a night out partying, not when young kids are watching telly with their parents."

Another wrote: "Just because you can doesn't mean you should! Inappropriate! Distasteful! Family show?!"

While some though the outfit celebrated her figure, many thought it wasn't suitable for a programme that was broadcast on national television, where children would be watching. Ms Holden and her Britain's Got Talent co-judge Alesha Dixon sparked 90 complaints last year to OFCOM for wearing dresses that some people deemed distasteful or inappropriate.

The finale dress has now beaten BBC One's Comic Relief, earlier in the year, which attracted 240 official complaints. Viewers expressed their anger about Russell Brand using the phrase 'fucking hell', as well as some of the sexual references made during the evening. Cara Delevigne talking about having sex on a plane in front of her dad, while Vic Reeves flashed a fake penis - all before 9pm.

An episode of Emmerdale got at least 275 people offended when one of the characters was taunted and abused in jail. Taking up fourth spot was a segment on Good Morning Britain, where 181 complained to OFCOM about far-right activist Tommy Robinson.

The former leader of the English Defence League accused Finsbury Park Mosque of 'creating terrorists' just after several worshippers were struck by a vehicle driven by an extremist. Despite Piers Morgan calling Robinson a 'bigoted lunatic', viewers were outraged that he was given air time to espouse his views.

Rounding out the top five was Benidorm, which caused 137 complaints when a character described a person with a cleft lip and palate as a 'face like a dropped pie'.
