This Awkward First Date Is So Hard To Watch

We've all had an awkward first date. In fact, when you're a generally awkward person, like me, it's not just the first date that's awkward, I've managed awkward long-term relationships.

Thankfully, for most people, the ice will melt and the awkwardness will disappear and no one need ever know that you asked your date if they were 'into music'.

Unless of course you're on Channel 4's First Dates, then the whole nation can tune in and watch. Brilliant, isn't it? Have a look at this clip and tell me that doesn't make your toes curl.

Twenty-four year-old Will was matched with Fran, 22, and both were country-lovers. These two are a match made in Heaven, surely, so why so awkward? Who knows but it's unbearable.

I mean, look at him. His nerves are palpable. You've really got to wonder why either of them has put themselves through all that.

I'd have just got really drunk, but that can go either way, really can't it? It's all good being more chatty and funny, but one vodka lemo too far and you're crying about your ex or trying to take your top off in public.

Will seems to reckon that asking her about her hobbies is fairly safe ground except, our gal Fran doesn't have any. Typical.

She tells him she can't cook, but that she can make fishcakes. Fishcake chat...OK, well that's something, he's having fishcakes for tea tomorrow, there's some common ground there. Come on, Cupid, do your thing, this is killing me.

It's a real relief when the food arrived, wasn't it?

He then decided to go straight in and ask about past relationships. She opened up and told him she's never been in a serious relationship and he was in the same - I mean, from watching this I can sort of see why neither of them had managed to make it much further than a first date.

Happily, love conquers all and at the end of the episode Will and Fran agreed to meet up again and the update stated that the pair are still seeing each other three months later. Ahh. So maybe being awkward isn't so bad after all - embrace it.
