Oscar-Nominated Director Is Looking For 'Miserable And Down-Trodden' Northerners For A Film

We all know someone who'd be great for this

There are many stereotypical traits that stick with people from certain areas of England.

If you're from the south, then people from further up the map may label you as soft and a bit foppish, whereas northerners will be looked upon by their southerner counterparts as 'common', miserable and a bit scruffy. Those from the Midlands? Dunno.

None of those stereotypes are necessarily true, but a lot of the time people play up to them, especially northerners. You see, the imaginary line that stretches from just below Merseyside, right through Yorkshire, from west to east, encompasses a number of folk who can identify with one another (Sorry Stokies, you're not northern).

Those from Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Yorkshire and Tyne and Wear - despite having many rivalries - are all very similar. They all like a right good knees-up, they're all used to the truly dismal weather, they bloody love a strong brew and biccie, and they excel at complaining about everything.

It's great. Karl Pilkington has made a living out of it. The Royle Family was based on it all. It's a way of life up here. And based on that, an Oscar-nominated director is after 'miserable and down-trodden' northerners for a new film.

Mike Leigh is looking for extras for a film about the 1819 Peterloo Massacre, when troops charged at a crowd of 60,000 peaceful protesters, killing 15 and injuring around 600 people.

'Authentic northern faces' are what's wanted for the 'epic' film, as well as "looking like you are tired, over-worked, had a hard life and, quite frankly, a bit hard done by."

If you're having that, or think you could be in with a shout, you can submit an application on Piece of Cake Casting, along with a 'gritty selfie', and head down to either Kent, Lancashire, Essex or Lincoln for the casting sessions.

A lot of people aren't going to have to dig very deep to find inspiration for the roles, are they?
