Cocky 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' Contestant Fails On First Question

Proof, if ever it were needed, that you shouldn't bang on about being clever right before you go on a national quiz show

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire rule numero uno: don't prattle on about how clever you are before you've even answered a single question, because you ain't going to look so smart when you fall at the first hurdle, on a question about Ikea meatballs. Just ask this guy.

Self-proclaimed nerd and medical school graduate Brenton seemed pretty self-assured when he stepped out under the studio lights on the US version of hit game show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

After a short speech about how the show made him realise it was cool to be smart and a bit of banter about using his imminent riches to pay off some of the course fees from his time at medical school, the young doctor was faced with a question they presumably didn't ask him on his MCAT.

Shortly after proclaiming "I'm always ready" to the show's host, Chris Harrison, Brenton was asked the following question:

"Snapping selfies in kitchens you can't afford and taking a 'meatball break' are two things BuzzFeed says every twentysomething does on their first trip... where?"

His options were Paris, London, Rome or Ikea.

Now, this is where it becomes abundantly clear that while Brenton was swotting up for exams, he was simultaneously missing out on the joys of wandering round Swedish furniture stores. Because anyone who's ever spent a Sunday afternoon browsing Ikea before would immediately know the answer to that question.

To his credit, Brenton did hover around the idea that the answer might have been Ikea for a little while, because of the meatball connection, but after a slight bit of deliberation, he confidently settled on Rome as his final answer.

With half of the country no doubt screaming and shouting at their TV screens in unison, Brenton made his decision and his hopes of being crowned a millionaire came crashing down all around him.

With his head in his hands, Brenton listened as he was told that he had failed on the first question and would be returning home empty handed.

So, if you're going to go on a TV quiz show, act like a total moron before you're asked the initial question. That way you will only exceed people's expectations.

Whatever you do, don't go on bragging about being smart. Karma will not like it, as our mate Brenton now knows all too well.
