Shocking footage has emerged from the Formula 1 Bahrain GP of Kimi Raikkonen pulling in for a pit stop and running over a mechanic's leg.

The Ferrari driver pulled into pit lane and his team worked quickly to get his car back up and running. Sky Sports says he was given the all clear to re-enter the field, however only three out of four wheels had been replaced.

Kimi obviously didn't know this and stepped on the accelerator.

The back-left wheel screeched into a mechanic's leg, virtually snapping it in two. A stretcher was brought in to assist the pit crew member, with Ferrari's Twitter account saying he was taken to hospital for treatment.

But Kimi was criticised by F1 fans around the world for seemingly not caring about his injured mechanic.

The former world champion was forced to retire because of the incident and was filmed walking into his garage without asking about his team mate.

However he's since made a statement, saying: "I don't know what happened. For sure, it's not great for him.

"I go when the light is green. I don't see what happens behind and unfortunately he got hurt. My job is to go when the light says so. Hopefully he's OK."

Sebastian Vettel who won the Bahrain GP adds: "I'm a bit sad as I think in the pit-stop with Kimi one of our mechanics got injured, so send him my best regards. It's a mixed day."
