The company behind Maya the Bee has apologised for airing a drawing of a penis during the kids' cartoon.

Studio 100, the company responsible for the the show, told the BBC the incident was 'absolutely inappropriate', adding it was 'very sorry'.

The rogue penis outline was spotted etched into a log, in the background of one of the scenes from an episode which originally aired in 2012.

The episode, called King Willi (honestly, it was), was removed by Netflix after the hidden penis was brought to its attention.

The surreptitious member was spotted by Chey Robinson, who was watching the show with her little ones.

Sharing a video of the episode on social media, she wrote: "Please be mindful of what your kids are watching!! I did NOT edit any images whatsoever, this is Maya The Bee, Season 1, Episode 35.

"I know I'm not going crazy and I know that something like this shouldn't be in a kids' show whatsoever. I'm extremely disgusted by it, there should be no reason my kids have to see something like this.

"I don't know if they're gonna do something about this or what, but there's no reason why this should be in this show.

"So, I'm just giving you guys a heads-up - just be careful what your kids are watching. Seriously, be mindful and hope that helps."

Now, I'll be honest, when I first saw the clip, I wasn't convinced that it was actually supposed to be a penis and that maybe Chey was overreacting. But it turns out it was. I guess those animators have got to entertain themselves somehow during hours of drawing the same old woodland...

In a statement, Studio 100 said: "An absolutely inappropriate image has been discovered in a four-second fly-by scene in one episode of the total of 78 episodes of the series. The origin of this image obviously results from a very bad joke from one of the 150 artists working on the production.

"This is indeed unacceptable to the Studio 100 Group as owner of the brand and all its partners and doesn't reflect the quality of its work and its values.

"Legal action has already been started. Studio 100 very much regrets this incident and would like to offer its sincere apologies to all Maya the Bee fans. At the same time the company is taking all suitable technical measures to remedy the situation."
