The survival thriller centres on a couple of men who find a huge gold nugget while out in the desert and think their luck is in.
However, things take a dark turn when one of the blokes (played by Anthony Hayes, who also directed and co-wrote the movie) heads off to bring back an excavator to get the nugget out of the ground, leaving Efron’s character behind where he soon descends into paranoia.
An official synopsis for the film reads: “When two drifters traveling across a deserted wasteland stumble across the biggest gold nugget ever found, the dream of immense wealth and greed takes hold.
“The discovery soon becomes problematic when they realise a large part of the nugget is buried underground.
They hatch a plan to protect and excavate the gold, with one man leaving to secure the necessary equipment. The other man remains and must endure the harsh desert elements while battling suspicion he has been abandoned to his own fate.
“Two-way radios keep them in contact, and with hours and eventually days of dead airtime in between each communication the stranded man begins to run out of supplies. Water is scarce, food even more so.
“His plans to protect the gold are interrupted by two strangers who may change the course of the men’s plans.”
The movie, which also stars its co-writer Susie Porter, will be released in Australia on 13 January - as of yet, it doesn’t have a UK or USA release date.
Director Hayes has said having Efron appear in his movie was a ‘gift’.
He said: “To have Zac Efron as my main man on this film is an absolute gift, and to see what he is creating already is like nothing we've seen from him before.
“I can't wait to deliver this bold, visceral and cinematic film to audiences all around the world.”
While producer Michael Schwarz added: “Gold is a classic morality tale told in an excitingly modern fashion, and the creative symmetry between Anthony and Zac has everyone involved incredibly excited to bring this film to global audiences.”
