Heung-Min Son Achieves Automatic Exemption From Military Service After Asian Games Win

You can't not be buzzing for the Spurs man

Heung-Min Son and his South Korea teammates have done it.

Son captained his national side to the Gold medal at the Asian Games, beating Japan 2-1 in the final thanks to extra time strikes from Seungwoo Lee and Hwang Hee Chan.

Given permission to miss a few Premier League games by Mauricio Pochettino and Spurs, Son assisted both goals in the final and now he and his colleagues will receive automatic exemption from compulsory military service.

According to national law, all men must do 21 months of duty before the age of 28. However, the South Korean Army does provide exceptions for sports stars who perform exceptionally at major tournaments.

And following on from a World Cup campaign where South Korea memorably beat reigning world champions Germany with two goals in stoppage time, the winning squad will now be given a special reprieve after going all the way in Indonesia.

It's brilliant news for the 26-year old, and you can only imagine the emotions he is feeling given how much that victory over Germany meant to him a few months back.

In the quarter finals, South Korea came from behind to beat Uzbekistan 4-3 and Son couldn't bring himself to watch the decisive penalty; he had to turn the other way with his hands covering his face.

You can't not be delighted for the former Hamburg man - but we reckon no-one will be more pleased than Spurs given there was a chance he would miss a lot of football had he not triumphed today.

Congratulations, Sonny.
