Romelu Lukaku opened his tally at the World Cup by bagging a brace against Panama, and he dedicated his goals to his mother in a touching moment.

The Belgian national team kicked off their campaign at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia with a thumping 3-0 win over Panama yesterday. Though their South American opponents offered little across the 90 minutes, the Belgians produced a clinical and professional second half after being frustrated for long spells in the game.

The Red Devils victory was in no small part due to a wonder goal from Napoli forward Dries Mertens, backed up by two goals from Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku pounced on a wonderful cross from his cross-city rival, Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne before showing his composure to score a second with a delightful chip.

After scoring, he wheeled away in celebration and paid respect to his mum, without whom he says none of this would have been possible.

Lukaku could be heard to shout "I love you, Mum", which must be a very proud moment for Mrs Lukaku.

How lovely.

However, it seems as if a lot of hard work and sacrifice has been put in by Lukaku and his family to bring him to this elite level.

Lukaku's celebrations followed a heartfelt interview in which he revealed his tough childhood, while recalling how his mother had to borrow bread.

"There were even times when my mum had to 'borrow' bread from the bakery down the street" he told the Players' Tribune.

Lukaku added: "The bakers knew me and my little brother, so they'd let her take a loaf of bread on Monday and pay them back on Friday.

"I knew we were struggling. But when she was mixing in water with the milk, I realized it was over, you know what I mean? This was our life.

"I didn't say a word. I didn't want her to stress. I just ate my lunch. But I swear to God, I made a promise to myself that day. It was like somebody snapped their fingers and woke me up. I knew exactly what I had to do, and what I was going to do. I couldn't see my mother living like that. Nah, nah, nah. I couldn't have that."
