Animals Looking At Themselves In Mirrors Have The Most Hilarious Reactions

Animals Looking At Themselves In Mirrors Have The Most Hilarious Reactions

Needless to say, the gorillas aren't best pleased

We've all done it. Maybe you've just woken up, maybe you had a big one the night before, maybe you've just got in, but the mirror never lies.

You walk past and catch a glimpse of yourself and immediately do a double take, before wondering: "Is that what I really look like?"

Yes, the mirror can be unkind, and unflattering, but at least we know what the score is with it. We don't immediately assume that a perfect doppelganger of ourselves has appeared out of nowhere and is perfectly mimicking our every move.

Spare a thought, then, for the members of the animal kingdom for whom that simply isn't the case.

Luckily for them, they wouldn't ordinarily come up against a mirror - maybe they catch themselves in the watering hole when they're having a wee drink, but they simply don't possess the tools to polish something enough to turn it into a mirror-standard reflective surface.

That's where the French photographer Xavier Hubert-Brierre comes in.

Hubert-Brierre and his wife travelled to Gabon with a gigantic mirror and set about capturing footage all of the wild animals as they received the fright of their lives.

They set it up in an opportune place, then promptly left it there. A camera was set up so that they could capture the animals reacting to it. It doesn't disappoint.

The leopards are particularly hilarious - if you've got a cat that occasionally catches a glimpse of itself in your bedroom mirror, you already know.

So just imagine that, only if the cat was huge and had the ability to pull a man's face off with one swipe of its mighty paw.

Naturally, being famously aggressive creatures, the gorillas aren't happy. They're territorial, too, so they probably think that another huge ape that is exactly as big as they are has moved in on their patch.

The chimps seem confused and angry at first, but they seem to be the closest to figuring out what is going on.

Well, they're supposed to be the clever ones, right?

As ever, the elephants are quite difficult to read. They never give too much away, do they? They seem supremely nonplussed by the whole thing. Partially confused, partially straight-up not arsed.

That said, the whole thing is worth giving a watch. It's interesting to see how wild animals react to something that we see as a completely normal part of life.

Perhaps that was Xavier's plan all along.

Or perhaps he wanted to see some gorillas go batshit mental.

Actually, it's definitely that, isn't it?
