Keeping his afloat, or not...

When 19-year-old Taylor Nicole Dean took her goldfish into a local aquarium this is probably the last thing she expected.

But it's brilliant.

Something wasn't quite right with her goldfish - it had bladder problems, and other treatments hadn't worked.

These sorts of issues are often why they swim upside down, lean to one side, or float to the top of the tank.

But then Taylor took it goldfish to Derek - an expert in San Antonio.

"I got some airline tubing that people usually use in their tank and just placed it around the goldfish," he explained.

"I added some valves to the bottom of it, which acted as a chair to prop him up."

Styrofoam was then added as a buoyancy aid and then pieces were removed, with great delicacy, just so it was the right weight for the fish to move around in.

And then, of course, the Internet responded with its gratefulness at Derek's ingenious work of art.

The original tweet had been re-tweeted 26,000 times and liked by over 76,000 people.

It gets better. The little orange beauty has had an upgrade too!

Is there any better story than seeing a distressed animal receive some welcome help from a human?

The endangered species has threats from poachers and traders - but The Tiki Hywood Trust is trying to stop this from happening.

They've formed an unusual friendship with the animals that can only be described as part dinosaur, part pinecone - helping to rehabilitate them and get them back to full health.
