But he was more scared of his date than death.

You know what it's like when you're using Tinder. You swipe left, you swipe right, you swipe left, you swipe right, you get a bit dry, you swipe right, you swipe right, you swipe right, you swipe right.

As 22-year-old Phil Stephenson told the Daily Star, he matched up with Nicole Graham on the Thursday. After a very short conversation he found out Nicole was going to Marmaris, Turkey, on her own the following day. For a bit of banter, he said he'd go along. Spontaneous lad.

Also a massive fail lad.

Then ensued turmoil as factions of the military took over CNN Turk, the Bosporus Bridge, the airport and the Sultan Mehmet Bridge. It was utterly horrendous.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sent a plea out to the people of Turkey via Face Time to fight against the coup, which was heard by many of his supporters.

The dissenters were stopped by civilians, other military commanders that did not stage an uprising and the police force and the attempted coup is now over.

Latest reports suggest 161 civilians and police died, as well as 104 "plotters," according to the government. 6,000 people have since been detained over the failed coup.

The violence was just as bad in Marmaris, with civilians and police officers being killed.

But the attempted coup by factions of the military in Turkey was actually the least of Phil's worries. Infatuation, rather than faction, was a far larger problem.

"It's not just because of what's happening in Istanbul that I want to come home. I think the girl thought she was getting a romantic holiday with me, but I just wanted a bit of banter.

"I thought we'd be going out every night and having wild times but now she's going round and asking people about romantic restaurants.

"People are absolutely loving it but I just want to come home.

"My mates are telling me to stick it out because it's so funny but it's not ISIS or terrorists I'm scared of, it's her."

Two sides of every story, however, and Nicole had this to say:

"He was ignorant and full of himself and seemed to be taking himself way too seriously."

Phil's booked a flight home for tonight. Again, he'll need to hope that there isn't something inconvenient like a coup going on to save him from the match from hell.

All of us - men and women, have been there before. Just not been in the middle of civil unrest when the date turns sour.

And swipe left.
