This is the moment a suspected Aldi shoplifter's great escape went hilariously wrong.

Police were called to Aldi in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, on Sunday (29 July) after a suspected shoplifter was detained in the store's custody following his almighty crash landing on the shop floor.

The guy in question had been detained on suspicion of stealing a while earlier and, after asking to use the loo, conjured up a masterplan and decided to flee the scene via the store's loft space.

We can hear the Mission Impossible theme tune now...

Off he scrambled in a bid for freedom, but moments later it all came crashing down as he plummeted 10ft (3m) to the shop floor, much to the surprise of other Aldi shoppers.

Thankfully nobody was hurt at the scene thanks to one staff member, who managed to move a lady and her child out of harm's way just in the nick of time.

Once the failed escapist came tumbling down, Aldi staff members pinned him up against the wall and detained him there until officers arrived at the scene to carry out his arrest.

PC Andy Forbes, from West Mercia Police, said: "We have no idea what he thought he could do or how he could get out.

"Eventually he falls through the ceiling while he's trying to make his escape.

"The staff knew he was in the loft space as they could hear him scurrying around like a hamster.

"Thankfully no one was injured, including him, and the staff at the store did a great job of moving customers out of the way.

"Obviously it is quite serious and humorous footage. It is certainly not something that happens on a daily basis.

"We just want to ask residents and shoppers to be vigilant of any suspicious behaviour.

"We want people to report incidents of shoplifting to us through the usual channels."

While Kidderminster Aldi has chose not to comment on the incident, the local police have since charged a man from Kidderminster with one count of theft and one count of criminal damage.

Kidderminster Police managed to see funny side of the crime and posted a video of the failed escape on Twitter, writing: "The getaway techniques of our shoplifters this morning could do with a little work... no one injured - just a little surprised!"

Just popping to Aldi to get some milk and - oh, there's a man crashing through the roof.

Blimey. Maybe next time just pay for your groceries, eh mate?
