Ireland Wants Four LADs To Represent Them At Eurovision After 'Father Ted' Cover

Their rendition of 'My Little Horse' has gone viral.

Many people are calling for the Irish band, Fallen Lights, to take their cover of a song from one of the country's greatest comedy shows to Portugal.

Ireland have won the Eurovision song contest a record-breaking seven times, and four years out of five between 1992 and their last victory in 1996. It's soon to be eight, surely, if these four gents take this song to Lisbon. It's an instant 12-pointer, they'd leave Great Britain in their wake.

'My Lovely Horse' was originally a song from the TV show Father Ted. The title character (played by Dermot Morgan), dreams of a duet alongside Father Dougal (Ardal O'Hanlon) with some fetching blue sparkling jackets .

The song features in the episode 'A Song For Europe' and was based on Ireland's rampant control over Eurovision. It sees Ted and Dougal trying to write a song for it.

After unsuccessfully writing their own tune, they decide to steal a former entry they believe nobody remembers. The plan backfired and they have to sing a tuneless song, but win the contest anyway.

Now four LADs from Mullingar, are feeling the will of a nation to take their cover of 'My Lovely Horse' all the way and live the dream of Ted and Dougal.

Band member, Graham Dowling, told LADbible that idea was very spontaneous: "We were going past where the Father Ted house is and thought we could do something different to promote our tour.

"One of the lads said we should record the song, so we learned it all in 20 minutes. There was a man taking a picture of the house, so we asked him to video us, we did it in one take and went from there."

The band, also made up of Andrew Cody, Jay Wiley and Joe Murray, are currently touring all 32 counties of Ireland in 32 days, with a gig in each one, to raise money for the charity Inspire, as well as promote their new single 'Pricetag'.

However, a trip to Portugal may have to wait.

"We're proud to be Irish, and represent the country, but maybe not Eurovision," said Graham.

"We're from Mullingar, and one of the Eurovision winners was from here. Maybe there's history that could repeat itself.

"We don't want to be a flop, like Blue. Eurovision is a tough business, and it takes a certain kind of act. And we've never really thought about it.

The competition will be hosted in Portugal for the first time, not that Graham thinks they'd be welcomed.

"We just went on a band holiday to Portugal and I don't think they'd want to see us again," he added. "Mind you, it's an excuse to catch up on the tan."

It sounds like they'll need a little more of a push to convince them to represent the nation. Looks like Jedward may have to be dusted off once again.
